My grandparents worked the land and received its bounty, but they didn't have all the commodities that were available in the city.

My maternal grandparents were colonos, who grew sugar cane and were part of a group of landowners who were contracted with a central to sell their sugar cane. All the colonias were near the railroad track.

Word got around Spain, the United States, and much of Europe that Cuban sugar and tobacco were the best in the world, and the Cuban colony prospered.

Early History

Even under the rule of the Spaniards, the island of Cuba was destined to prosper.  It had fertile soil and favorable weather.  After some time, Spanish cattle ranchers planted sugar cane and erected sugar mills.

She was a Republic

~She was a republic; a constitutional republic with three branches of government~

As we progressed down the alley, I heard a woman screaming...................all of a sudden I found myself in the living room of a home I had never been to.

I was outside when Spy Number Two came out of her house. I remember thinking, Again, this pest. What does she want now?

“Walk with me. I don’t want to walk alone,” she said.

“Where are we going?” She didn’t answer. I kept asking, “Where are we going?”

“Just walk, just walk with me,” she kept saying while taking my arm and holding onto me to persuade me to go with her. Her demeanor was apprehensive, and I could see she felt very uncomfortable with what she was about to do.

She kept brushing my questions aside. We finally got to the corner of Aricochea and crossed the street. I was thinking, I am not going to get you any more oranges. That’s for sure. My God, we are almost to Grandmother’s house. Where are we going!
