Just finished choosing book's Internal Design.  I also forwarded photograph for possible book cover.  So excited.............

On the same shores...

By 1939 the persecution of Jews by Nazi Germany was well under way. During Brú’s presidency, the ocean liner MS St. Louis arrived in Habana carrying approximately nine hundred German Jews, who were fleeing Nazi Germany and seeking asylum. The Cuban government imposed a new visa fee of five hundred dollars, and many aboard did not have the money. Habana had a large, wealthy Jewish population and some of the Jews who were able to get off the ship had Cuban relatives who paid the fee. Yet only about thirty passengers were able to disembark. After being turned down by Cuba, the United States, and Canada, a few more passengers found permanent asylum in England. Of the remainder, who were left in various European ports, only eighty-four escaped Europe, and at least 250 of the ship’s passengers were among those who died at various death camps during the Holocaust.[i]
On the same shores where these Jews lingered before being turned away, twenty-three years later, Cubans were riddled with bullets while trying to escape their own totalitarian regime. Cubans were only twenty-three years away from drowning in the same ocean while trying to flee to freedom.

Getting family pictures ready

Today is Fidel Castro's birthday.  He was born not too far from Holguín on August 13, 1926.  He has outlived all those he betrayed. Today on his 90th birthday,  I'm getting closer and closer to fulfilling my dream to publish Lights Out: A Cuban Memoir of Betrayal and Survival.  I just finished going over family pictures that will be included in book.  There were no tears this time.  Instead our loved ones, now in Heaven, seemed to smile and  say we are all together, there's no more pain and we are helping you tell the story.

The masses adored.............

The masses adored Camilo Cienfuegos, the revolutionary commander. On October 21, 1959, Fidel sent good-hearted Camilo to arrest Matos. When they look back, Cubans who lived through the Revolution feel it was very possible that, when Fidel sent Camilo to arrest Matos, he hoped gunfire would be exchanged and both Camilo and Matos would be killed. Another possibility he hoped for was that if only Camilo were killed, his death would be blamed on Matos, and Fidel would be able to execute Matos without losing public favor. If these were Fidel’s plans—and many Cubans of that era believe they were—the plans failed.
Camilo and his men arrested Matos without a bullet being fired. Matos and his men were put on a plane to Habana on October 22, although the populace did not know Matos had been arrested until Fidel gave a televised tirade on October 26.

Partially from Como Llego la Noche by Huber Matos

I'm happy to announce

I'm happy to announce I have decided to self-publish Lights Out: A Cuban Memoir of Betrayal and Survival.  After doing extensive research, I decided to go with CreateSpace. Even though we are in the preliminary stages of process, I'm very impressed with CreateSpace and their staff.  I will keep all of you posted.

More information coming at noon..........don't miss it!

The noose tightened

By the end of 1962, the noose tightened and the communist system was now rock-solid in Cuba.

Batista continued.............

Batista continued to go after the big honchos of the political opposition, but he still did not interfere with ordinary people’s liberties, nor did he stand in the way of Cuba’s progress. Roads were built and repaired, drains and aqueducts improved, and good quality buildings constructed. Many big construction projects were awarded to Cuban unions, some of whose members and many of whose leaders were communists. Productivity increased. Cubans continued to strongly dislike Batista, but the economy was strong and there was free enterprise. Regardless of who was in power, the Cuban Republic had a vibrant economy, religious freedom, and an excellent healthcare system. There was freedom of movement, including the right to travel abroad.

"There is no greater.................."

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”
Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

I will have news regarding the publishing of Lights Out soon.

Fidel hand-picked the commanders he wanted

Fidel hand-picked the commanders he wanted with him when he entered Habana. He chose Commander Huber Matos and Commander Camilo Cienfuegos, neither of whom were communists, because they were respected by the people. His brother Raúl and Che Guevara were left out.
