Batista
continued to go after the big honchos of the political opposition, but he still
did not interfere with ordinary people’s liberties, nor did he stand in the way
of Cuba’s progress. Roads were built and repaired, drains and aqueducts
improved, and good quality buildings constructed. Many big construction
projects were awarded to Cuban unions, some of whose members and many of whose
leaders were communists. Productivity increased. Cubans continued to strongly
dislike Batista, but the economy was strong and there was free enterprise.
Regardless of who was in power, the Cuban Republic had a vibrant economy,
religious freedom, and an excellent healthcare system. There was freedom of
movement, including the right to travel abroad.
