My maternal grandparents were colonos, who grew sugar cane and were part of a group of landowners who were contracted with a central to sell their sugar cane. All the colonias were near the railroad track.

Word got around Spain, the United States, and much of Europe that Cuban sugar and tobacco were the best in the world, and the Cuban colony prospered.

Early History

Even under the rule of the Spaniards, the island of Cuba was destined to prosper.  It had fertile soil and favorable weather.  After some time, Spanish cattle ranchers planted sugar cane and erected sugar mills.
