You don’t have to be an anthropologist or an archaeologist to realize this street was once a vibrant, well maintained street. The houses were painted, the streets and sidewalks whole. Every president, including Batista allocated a budget for “obras públicas.” Unions were strong! Cuba had a lot of social programs. Every city was alive with businesses. It was a delight to walk through any Cuban city. These houses were owned by hard-working people. Local government served the people and ensured the cities were properly maintained and infrastructure was maintained and replaced as needed. These are the streets tourists don’t see.
